El Salvador is among the 10 countries most affected by internal displacement attributed to conflict in the world. Given the high levels of violence, insecurity, and impunity that affect the population daily, El Salvador appeared on the list after countries such as Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.

The Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID 2018) published by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) states that, during 2017, 296,000 people were forced to flee their homes in El Salvador. 30.6 million internal displacements have happened worldwide, 11.8 million of these (39% of all cases) were due to conflict situations, the rest were displacements related to natural disasters.
