Data from Cristosal, an NGO that serves people displaced by violence, reveal an increase of 53% in victims in 2017.
Érica Pérez (name changed) was 17 when she disappeared for 24 hours last year. While her family was looking for her in the San Salvador neighborhood where she lived, in all the places she frequented, and asked for help on social networks to locate her, several gang members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) had kidnapped her to rape her in more than one occasion. After the rapes and other attacks, the gang members allowed Erica to return to her home but forced her not to report what happened to the National Civil Police (PNC). If she denounced, she was told, they would kill her and her family.
