They will issue a law to protect displaced persons

The Legislation Commission of the Legislative Assembly and the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) agreed yesterday that they would work on creating a draft law for the protection of people displaced due to gang violence.

In 2018, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice ordered the Legislative Assembly to create a law to protect displaced persons; however, the regulations have not yet been drawn up.

The bill that the Legislation Commission will create with the support of UNHCR will include the initiatives presented by civil society organizations.

For example, in its proposed law, the non-governmental organization Cristosal recommends creating shelters for the care of victims.

Besides, it proposes creating a commission for the protection of displaced persons that will depend on the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

In addition to helping create the draft law, UNHCR offered the Legislation Commission technical support to update, through studies, the displacement statistics because the current numbers are from 2016 when 71,500 cases were registered.
